Chhapaak (2020) A movie Review…

Chhapaak is a movie about Acid Attacks in India, this is a drama film directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar in collaboration with Fox Star Studios. This movie is well, horrifying, beautiful, tragic, and masterful. Deepika Padukone is simply amazing in this role.

At the time of my review, this was the current Rotten Tomatoes score!

To say that this movie is about Acid Attacks understates the whole premise of this movie, as this movie acts as a way to draw attention to the on-going issue that plagues India. Acid, despite being recently ruled a controlled chemical in India, is still actively sold and is largely unregulated.

The description from IMDB is as follows:

The trials and triumphs of Malti, an acid attack survivor. From the investigation of the attack to the court proceedings, the medical treatment to the emotional healing. Chhapaak is the story of the unquashable human spirit.

–IMDB

This movie touched me, and as you all know, if you have read my previous posts about Bollywood movies, I have a soft spot for them. This movie is superbly done, and I have to commend all those involved in making this movie. This is drawing attention towards something that should not happen in civilized society. And as this is based on a true story, it is even more important that they use this calibre of actors/actresses to bring forth this issue.

Deepika Padukone is amazing, and I cannot stress that enough. Having seen this movie a few times now, and each time it hits me in the feels, in all the right ways. I cannot express my love for this movie enough.

Sickening numbers of acid attacks

As you can see, acid attacks are something of a bad thing. And these are only the reported attacks, there is most likely, many that go unreported due to acid killing people. Not that I am trying to turn this review of this gorgeous movie into a political statement, but, it sorta is a political statement, that change is required.

More often than not, these attacks are by men, against women, and usually because those men cannot have that woman, so he will ‘ruin’ her for all other men. It is a sickening thing. But I digress, lets get back to the movie shall we?

In tradition of my previous posts with regards to movie reviews, I will not go into any more details, but I hope that I have provided enough for you, the reader, to want to see this movie. It is truly worth it. I give this a 9.5 out of 10. It is one of my favourites.

Happy New Year… A Movie Review.

Happy New Year is a hindi movie starring Shah Ruhk Khan. This movie is a comedy, drama, but more than anything, it is the comedy. The female interest of the movie is played by Deepika Padukone. And when she plays opposite of Shah Ruhk Khan, you can bet that there is some on screen chemistry.

I have a soft spot for Hindi movies, and this one is like no other, it is so bad that it is good. This won awards, and both Shah Ruhk Khan and Deepika Padukone felt really bad accepting the awards because of how bad the movie was.

But when you are Shah Ruhk Khan and over 3 billion people know you as a house hold name, you’re going to win awards for just about anything.

Shah Ruhk Khan

The movie is about a man seeking revenge for his father, and to do so, he must heist diamonds from the man who betrayed his father. But to do so, he must do something completely unimaginable, he must compete in an international dance competition.

Deepika Padukone

The reason every female knows who Shah Ruhk Khan is. And me too… To be honest.

The movie stars more than just Shah Ruhk Khan and Deepika Padukone, but I won’t go into details here, just know that the comedy lineup here is great.

Recognize the faces? I sure do!

As the movie progresses the stars each face their own situations they must overcome. From epilepsy, so not being able to dance, to requiring anger management, and being a drunk. Obviously all fueled by hate, and for revenge.

A very good reason to watch this movie. IMHO.

This cast of characters comes together rather well in a terrible way, this movie shouldn’t work, it shouldn’t of won awards, but yet, somehow it did and I am thankful for it. Sometimes a movie can be so bad, that it is good. And this movie is one of those.

I give this movie a solid 8 out of 10. Without spoilers, its good, if you have time to read my reviews, you have time to throw on this movie, hit the subtitle button, and watch, laugh, cringe, and smile. Its worth it.

Goin’ Up?

Chennai Express… A Movie Review.

Chennai Express is a movie starring Shah Ruhk Khan and Deepika Padukone. Two of my favourite actors from the Bollywood movie scene. This is a star crossed lovers type movie.

Shah Ruhk Khan

It starts as Shah Ruhk Khan’s character, Rahul, is tasked by his grandmother to take the ashes of his grandfather to southern India as part of a ‘ritual’, I don’t know the right words to use here as I am not Indian/Hindi. But Rahul, who has been trying to get out of the family business, decides to lie to his grandmother and not do it, he boards a train heading a town away to meet his friends and everything goes wrong.

Chennai Express is a fun movie though, the standard Bollywood things apply, singing, dancing, fight scenes, manliness beyond compare, true love, and of course, two languages I don’t speak. This movie hits me with Hindi, and Tamil. Now I am trying to learn Hindi, but it is a slow process, throwing Tamil into the mix has slowed me down. However, in India, there are over 1600 spoken languages. You read that right, 1600, so I should be somewhat thankful that this movie at least spoke the hindi in which I am working on learning.

But I digress, this movie is a beautiful story and I fell quite in love with the characters. The acting, dancing, the way the camera moved, it was all done right, sure it has the atypical Bollywood spin to it, that you don’t traditionally see in block buster Hollywood movies, but that is the joy of Bollywood movies. That is the fun, its different, and it is amazing.

I give this movie a 8 out of 10, it really is worth the watch. If you are not a fan of Bollywood movies, or you don’t like international movies, then you should put that fear or hate aside, turn this movie on, and throw on the subtitles. It takes some getting used to watching whole movies with subtitles, but it is worth the adventure.

Shah Ruhk Khan is one of India’s best actors, beloved by over 3 billion people, that isn’t even a joke, literally over 3 billion people. Shah Ruhk Khan is a household name. That is how famous this actor is, so if you want to find out why, I recommend you watch this movie, as well as his other works, and I promise you will not be disappointed.
